It was only a matter of time before Jason Isaacs won his promotion to officially approved national lust object, up from that odd limbo of "necessary equivocation". That limbo wherein, when a husband/boyfriend asks, half-grudgingly, from a half-cuddle on the sofa: "D'you think that guy's good-looking, then?", his wife/girlfriend would by law have to shrug: "That one there? S'pose so, hadn't really noticed?" while quietly trying to flense her own thumbs with the cheese knife, force herself to wonder about the best next chairman of the IMF? anything to avoid shuggling forward on hands and knees to actually lick the TV screen with lust.

Now he's up there, I'm told by female friends, with Colin Firth and Daniel Craig, in that he is safely, officially, fanciable and thus women can drool at will; bizarrely, this makes husbands feel safer ? Isaacs is now out of the league of earthbound homunculi. It took, as with the other two (Firth's blinking emergence in soaked yet well-cut cuff and trouser; Craig as Bond having his wounds dabbed while vulnerable and naked), one scene in particular. In the splendid Case Histories, a difficult but ultimately more than successful adaptation (by Ashley Pharoah, of Life on Mars) of the fine, sharp prose of Kate Atkinson, Jason Isaacs as Jackson Brodie, former cop turned PI in Edinburgh, had to dig a dog's grave.

That wasn't the moment, not quite. But he had had to dig it, as a favour, for two poshish sisters, played by Natasha Little and Fenella Woolgar, into whom he'd bumped while being nice to their elderly neighbour. Nice to neighbours; willing to sweat at digging an animal grave; unwillingly caught in Natasha's kitchen stripping off to wash himself down: you could feel half the knee-tendons of Britain a-tremble (I mean the female half; not that everyone had just one knee trembling. That would just be weird).

He also solved all the stuff, pretty much. The answers were complex enough to make it worth watching him solving. Oh, there were quibbles. Quite how a struggling ex-cop PI in Edinburgh affords fine Georgian offices at the top of Victoria Street and a gorgeous mews flat in the country (private investigators in my home town, in my experience, were more usually partial to impetigo, angry, thin-lipped wives and early deaths).

Quite why Brodie thought it was a grand idea to take his daughter, on the occasional day release from his angry, pretty ex-wife, to convents stuffed with murderers, to cemeteries, to death scenes, to abattoirs full of dying unicorns (I made one of those up) and then to watch him break a man's arm, and then not expect the ex to be a bit? unbridled? when the wee one blurted it all out. Why there were so few Scottish accents. But by and large, this was perfect Sun/Mon viewing, and the one unresolved leitmotif ? flashbacks to the death of his own, presumably, sister ? means, again presumably, that we get more. Yes please.

The only thing that looked better than Isaacs (other than Natasha Little) was the cinematography. Edinburgh looked glorious, in a way it can when it's in the mood, which, trust me, isn't always, sulky old town; we've seen it shot this way before, but, coupled with the equally lovely frames from Yorkshire's moors and old stone, this reminded me powerfully how the regions are linked, and that in that part of the sun's world there are always yellowed spires, and black depths, and very few middling shallows.

Which brings me to Injustice, much of it shot in and around Southwold. Skies wider than imaginable, hard, cold, green rollers off the pier, a lilt of apologetic but quite forgiven English pretend hills. In both Case Histories and Injustice, we got the thrilling wrongness of the finest landscapes on our islands merged with? well, between them both, at last week's count, child abuse, stalking, kiddie porn, gun-running, lethally toxic waste, jail rape, venal police corruption, rectal polyps and Celine Dion.

Anthony Horowitz's five-parter started confusingly, became brilliant, and tapered only at the end. It was complicated. Until recently, just a select few would have bothered to stay the course, all five episodes, because many people do have weekday nights out; and, honestly, miss one of these and you'd have literally lost the plot. But watch-again means many more will have seen this through, rightly so.

The star was meant to be James Purefoy, a fine actor who unfortunately had to play the good guy, a leftie barrister, who had cracked up and moved to Suffolk after his lifelong convictions jumped him from behind. He'd defended someone, passionately and successfully, on a murder trial, only for the berk to arrive at his chambers with crap wine to say thanks and to boast, nastily, that he'd actually done it. Every barrister's nightmare. I'm told. Purefoy's Will Travers had something of a breakdown and so had subsequently to live richly, in Southwold, with pretty windswept Dervla Kirwan and a refusal to take on any murder case or any defendant about whom he had any doubts. A nice, certain life.

Which left the way open for the real star to be the interesting one, Charlie Creed-Miles, as the corrupt local cop, who loathed Travers and his Guardian-reading ilk and was not above fitting up a deserving villain in the way the Southwold sea is not above the sky. I worried that his? bastardness? was laid on a bit too thickly, slightly overwritten; but with five nights to fill this couldn't possibly have been as tightly scripted as Case Histories. And Creed-Miles, as ever, pulled it off, kept you believing.

This was billed as something of a meditation on how lawyers know they're right to defend an innocent, despite the evidence; but I don't know if this can ever be explored in only five nights, because I don't think any of them actually know themselves. In the end, I was left seeing it as a slightly subtler, wiser invitation to question the parallels between lawyers pulling all kinds of court stunts when they're convinced of innocence, and cops cutting corners (well, shredding pages) when they're convinced of guilt. End-score was two villains dead, plus a bad if well-intentioned cop, and Purefoy looking more at peace, and more smug, having dealt with his demons, at gunpoint, back reading the Guardian. Was this justice? This gripped, mainly, and did make you think and, incidentally, must feature the only filmed sequence where anyone has run out of Norwich station, hailed an urgent cab and ordered: "Follow that? bus." And, what with this and another rocking Scott & Bailey? what's gone right with ITV summer drama?

New star of The Restaurant Inspector is Fernando Peire, director of London's Ivy, and a star he will be ? suave, personable, with infinite attention to detail. Well, he will be the star, but the star of this opener was actually Maria, possibly the most stubborn Italian-restaurant matriarch in Britain. The pair clashed from the beginning, at Alexandra's in Ramsgate; one of those places where the menu's the size of a Haynes manual, everything's from frozen and the family's foibles ? including an alcove full of Diana memorabilia ? took preference to customers' needs; and they wondered why they were failing. The argument between the pair over the salad bar ascended to heroic proportions; it was up there with Fischer-Spassky.

Slowly, charmingly, Fernando won her and her family round ? the scene where he parodied her diva-ish head-in-the-air style of "service" was sweet as tiramisu ? and, by the end, the menu was fresh, and blackboarded, the tat stripped, the loathsome salad bar gone and Maria, a former model, smiling gorgeously, on the walls from a previous life (Fernando's surprise) and smiling in real life, as real life returned through the doors. This promises addiction.

Kids Learn to Love Animals on PBS?s ?Wild Kratts?

Sometimes there are questions we can?t necessarily answer for our kids.

How fast can a cheetah run? How much does a baby elephant weigh? What is the world?s biggest whale?

For such creature queries, luckily, there?s the PBS series Wild Kratts, an animated show that takes children on adventures into the animal kingdom.

The show?s stars, New Jersey-born brothers Martin, 45, and Chris, 41, shared an interest in animals while growing up, and after pursuing zoology degrees in college, they set off to explore their passions.

?We picked up a video camera, went to Costa Rica and started filming wildlife videos,? Chris tells PEOPLE Moms & Babies.

?We edited them in our basement and started bringing them to schools to show kids.?

On their first series, Kratts? Creatures, the brothers introduced viewers to all kinds of exotic animals. But with Wild Kratts, they take things a step further.

?There are so many never-before-seen animal moments,? Martin says. ?No matter how long we spend out in Africa filming creatures, you can?t see it all. But with animation, we can show everything.? While scenarios are often made up, the science is never falsified ? it is educational, after all.

The show centers on Martin and Chris, assisted by a team of scientists who create crazy inventions that give them the abilities of animals. ?We love being animated ? you don?t get any bumps or bruises that way,? jokes Martin.

But what the brothers love even more is bringing animal education to children. ?We want kids to meet all of these amazing animals with whom we share the planet,? Martin says. ?When kids really know about animals, they want to work to save them.? Adds Chris, ?Animals can take you anywhere in the world of science.?

Camelot: episodes one and two

Secret sons, handsome knights and unbelievable dialogue ? who needs the Tudors when you've got Camelot?

Spoiler alert: Don't read on if you haven't watched the first two episodes of Camelot on Channel 4. And if you've seen further episodes, please don't post spoilers

If you've been crying into your sofa cushions since the end of The Tudors, wondering where your next hit of historically dubious, sexually charged, nostril-flaring is going to come from, then dry your eyes. From the people who brought you The Tudors comes Camp-a-lot! I mean Camelot. It's even ruder and sillier than its predecessor and we begin with two hours of it.

As Monty Python once famously said, "Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government." But the Lady of the Lake in this new interpretation does rather more than chuck a sword at Arthur. In fact it's very much the other way around. Rude.

Main players

Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) picks up where Jonathan Rhys-Myers left off. Biggest nostrils of the series by far and a nice line in mad-eye acting too. He's determined to make Arthur king of the Britons by staring his enemies into submission. Oh, and he's magic.

Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower) is straight from the set of Made in Chelsea, a callow, floppy-haired roister-doister with an eye for the ladies, lake-dwelling or otherwise. Grew up thinking he was an ordinary boy but is in fact rightful heir to the throne.

Morgan (Eva Green), Arthur's sultry, sulky hoodie of a half-sister with a grudge against their father, King Uther, wants Arthur's throne.

King Lot (James Purefoy) is a thrusting, roaring beast of a man intent in taking over the kingdom with the help of Morgan. Within minutes of meeting her he is taking her roughly in the throne room.

Queen Igraine (Claire Forlani) ? Made almost entirely of right-angles and widow of the recently poisoned King Uther. After a complicated bit of exposition about shape-changing and skullduggery it turns out she is Arthur's real mum. It's ye olde Jeremy Kyle show.

Guinevere (Tamsin Egerton) ? Blonde.

The setup

Morgan stomps into court with her hood up (typical teenager) and gives her dad the full evil-pointy-finger-of-vengeance. She is hacked off with him for the unexplained death of her mother, her own subsequent banishment and his swift remarriage to Igraine, a woman with cheekbones so pronounced she can balance goblets on them. She demands to be allowed back to court but gets a punch in the face and the old never-darken-these-doors routine from Uther.

Uther then eats a dodgy drumstick and dies. Merlin comes storming up to the castle gates and opens them with the sheer force of his acting. But he is too late. So he does an Alan Partridge and signs the king's will with Uther's hand still clasped around the quill then wrenches the royal ring off his cold dead finger. He means to make Arthur the new king. Uther's secret son that he took from the castle at birth and gave to a humble family of simpletons in the sticks for safekeeping.

And so the battle lines are drawn with Morgan and her evil cohort on one side and Merlin, Arthur and a handful of handsome knights on the other. Both sides claim the throne is theirs and you can bet there'll be a whole lot of shagging and fighting before the winner is declared. Judging by the first episodes, mostly shagging.

Highlights

At exactly 7 minutes and 40 seconds, we get the first full-on nudity. It's Arthur shagging his brother's girlfriend under a tree. We can confirm that the future King of the Britons has a very smooth bottom.

When Merlin comes to tell Arthur he's won Britain's Got a New Monarch and is really Uther's son, his adoptive mum (Lucy Cohu) looks like she's having a serious attack of the giggles.

Lot roaring into the throne room with his soldiers like the Sweeney and informing the assembled company "Find the kitchen, I'm bloody starving"! I'm King Lot and I haven't had any dinner!

King Lot saying to Morgan, "I could split you from your gut to your throat," while pointing his massive sword at her. Hell of a chat-up line. By the scene's end they are nakedly rutting on an oaken four-poster and yelling battle talk at each other.

Merlin telling Arthur how he came to be born. When a barbarian king and a buxom wench love each other very much ... "You want me to believe I'm a product of sorcery and rape?" asks Arthur. That's an episode of Who Do You Think You Are right there.

Morgan and Lot coming to Camelot to meet Arthur and reluctantly conceding his claim to the throne. "Oh, fuck this," growls Lot before storming out. I'm sure that's how they talked then.

Arthur having a mucky dream about the Lady in the Lake and then waking up to find Merlin's face inches from his shouting, "Who IS she?" Kind of trumps that "And when I woke up there was a cup of tea by my bed" story, doesn't it.

Morgan asking if Lot remembers his parents dying and him replying, "Yes. I killed them." And all while she sultrily polishes his sword. (Not a euphemism.)

Arthur pulling the sword from the stone, at the top of a very high waterfall, then realising he has nothing to hang onto, causing him to plummet hundreds of feet to the water below. One for the Darwin Awards.

Guinevere and Arthur meeting at the post-coronation disco like it's Boujis on a Saturday night, the firelight dancing playfully over his bum-fluff.

Morgan going out in a see-through nightie in the rain to talk to a wolf. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Then she flashes her boobs at it. I was wildly applauding by this point.

Thoughts and observations

? It was surely a massive mistake to kill off Lot in the second episode. His roaring had reached Brian Blessed levels of enthusiasm and his beard was the best thing about the whole show. Who will Morgan have mad, flailing intercourse with now?

? Arthur's bum-fluff takes away from his royal charisma somewhat. He wants to find a bit of flint and a shiny plate and get it sorted.

? Eva Green's sexy goth thing is all very well for two episodes, but there are another eight to go. Where is she going to take it? I do continue to admire her eye make-up though. How does she get them so smoky?

? The Arthur/Leontes/Guinevere love triangle is about as believable as the Dawson/Pacey/Joey one. She'd so obviously go for Pacey/Leontes every time. The blond, fey ones are never really in contention.

? Apologies to all blonds as, reading it back, this blog is, like, totally racist to your people.

Oscar 2011: Top Eight Stunning Actresses on the Red Carpet (1)

The 83^rd Oscar ceremony brightly shined by numerous Hollywood stars has been going further and further away from everyone. Indeed it is a wonderful and memorable event in early spring that has left us innumerable pleasant impressions, in particular all the beautiful figures that used to appear on and walk past the red carpet. It seems that the adoption of full color design has become the mainstream for the formal dresses of all these beauties at the Oscars this year. No matter what color it would be, perhaps red, or green, or sapphire…, any of these can be the first choice made by our gorgeous stars on the carpet. However as conservative as always, the black / dark color is still warmly welcomed and chosen by many actresses, even there is no exception to the Nicole Kidman, the ever-victorious winner on the red carpet! Anyway, now let’s just pick up eight representative actresses from all the beauties and go through each of them as we reckon they are the most stunning ladies on the red carpet this year!

1. Natalie Portman

The chattings about top stars seems to always start with talking about “the top of all tops” at first, thus there is no exception this time either. Natalie Portman, the big winner of Oscars 2011 is no doubt the No.1 person that all eyes would first focus on. Not only having obtained the Best Actress for being a gorgeous black swan in the movie, but she also got the winning on love so that she was able to proudly show us her baby bump that contained the fruit of love with her fiancé Benjamin Millepied. Although the pregnancy might lead to lose her figure slightly as what we have seen at the ceremony, the Rodarte’s violet silk chiffon draped gown with Swarovski Cystals she wore really looks to be nicely designed for her and perfectly fit her current body shape. When looking at from the front, people might even hardly spot that she has been pregnant. Also the hue of purple as a deep color would not go so far to make her figure look too well-rounded by vision, would it? Anyway she always looks brilliant.

2. Anne Hathaway

So far no one could oppose that Natalie Portman was absolutely the most dazzling leading actress. However, the title of the greatest star on the red carpet should actually go to Anne Hathaway, our eloquent and humorous Oscars host whose knockout look and outfit changing show including heaps of top fashion brands such as Givenchy, Lanvin, Valentino, Armani Prive, Oscar de la Renta, Susanna Bil etc. really made her become the super scene stealer throughout the whole ceremony at that night! Here just let’s take a look at her hot red strapless Valentino gown when she was posing on the red carpet before the stirring award ceremony formally started.

3. Sandra Bullock

Even being one year earlier than Natalie Portman, another Hollywood super star Sandra Bullock won the same top prize at 2010 Oscar ceremony. What she brought to show us this year was a fire red strapless gown of the famous Vera Wang brand, which fairly matched the deep ruby purse in her hand. Sandra explained to the media that choosing such a fresh red color for her dress was just due to this color was her son Louis’ favorite then she simply followed his idea to make the decision. Meanwhile she also described how badly she suffered from less sleep after winning the Best Actress last year. Now she could get a big relax and she was so happy because her goal was just “to have as much fun as possible” this time. But still, she felt excited even spoke something out when awarding “Best Actor” to Colin Firth, “…Am back assh*le, stronger than ever, and I have nothing to fear because you have not completely destroyed me”.

Amy Adams in Valentino Spring 2011

We think we've figured out her problem vis a vis the red carpet: she's tripped up by formal looks. It seems like every time we see her somewhere dressed in a sportier or more casual manner, she nails it. Put her in a gown, however, and she (and her stylist) makes one bad choice after another. In other words, for the first time in a long time, she looks adorable on the RC.

Annette Bening

She's been nailing her looks fairly consistently, but then again, she always was a good, if not particularly showy or overtly chic red carpet dresser. Just to continue our go-against-the-grain-ism as per the Oscars, we think she's the one who should win Best Actress; not Natalie. We didn't exactly love The Kids Are All Right, but there's one silent, wordless shot in the film that secured her win, in our minds.

She looks cute here. Cute and age-appropriate.

Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth

We don't mind the caps, Geoffrey, but do they have to be Huggy Bear-sized? There are more flattering ones out there, we assure you. And how does Colin manage to make the suit/dark shirt/no tie look chic? On a lesser man it would make him look like a bouncer at a nightclub, but Colin wears clothes so well he'd have to actively work at it to look bad. He's our choice for Best Actor, by the way. The King's Speech is a very formulaic film but his performance is amazing. You really can't take your eyes off him.

Helena Bonham Carter

She really toned down the cray cray. She stopped at just the right point. Had she toned it down any further no one would have recognized her. We can't wait to see what kind of disaster she's going to wear on Oscar night.

James Franco

See, James just can't pull it off the way Colin can.

Javier Bardem

The jacket's a little snug, but everything else is perfect.

Jeff Bridges

This may be an unpopular opinion but we wish he'd cut his hair and either trim or shave off the beard. He's cultivated a look for himself, but he's still a very good-looking man and we think this mountain man look ages him terribly. Besides, it's run its course. Time to try a suave older man look, Jeff.

Case Histories: a tough adaptation to crack

It started in a hungover room in a Blackpool hotel and ended, some 13 years later, with champagne out of a plastic cup in the freezing car park of a crematorium in Chiswick. Gene Hunt and Sam Tyler, a brown Cortina and a red Audi, finally shuffled off to TV Heaven. It had been a long, wonderful, exhausting journey and I was quite ready to put my feet up and watch Cash in the Attic for a couple of weeks. Then I found a Jiffy bag stuffed in my post box...

Inside was Case Histories, a book I had admired hugely when it was published back in 2004. Ruby Films and the BBC were in the early stages of considering an adaptation and were looking for a screenwriter. I didn't think it was for me but thought I'd reread the first chapter. And then Jackson Brodie, the private detective protagonist, wove his magic: battered, decent, compulsive, complex, a character impossible to turn your back on. A character impossible to hand over to another screenwriter. I was hooked.

I'd adapted novels before, but both Thomas Hughes and Thomas Hardy were safely dead and it was with some trepidation that I travelled to Edinburgh to meet Kate Atkinson. It was the oddest of blind dates ? the novelist and the would-be adaptor. Kate was very kind and very generous, but I also felt her nervousness at handing her characters over to a complete stranger. We walked around a rainy Edinburgh and she showed me the houses her characters might live in, where they shop and work and drink. Her precision was very impressive and I think some tentative bonding occurred. She also gave me a CD of songs that Jackson Brodie liked ? I was delighted to discover that Kate, Jackson and I share a taste for Kendel Carson and Mary Gauthier.

Then came the best bit, sitting at my kitchen table with a now-battered copy of Case Histories, a pile of index cards, different coloured pens, and Mary Gauthier singing "I'm looking for a safe place to land". My hardest task was rendering Kate's playful, subtle relationship with genre into series television, where we like our genres very unsubtle indeed. Jackson Brodie has several characteristics that are familiar to viewers of detective fiction: the combative ex-wife; the heart-tugging child; the tragedy in his past. In the books Kate spins this with a web of magic realism that gives the narratives the pace of genre, but the wit of irony.

The trouble is, if you stick an actor on a Scottish street, lumber him with an ex-wife and a personal tragedy and job as a private detective, and then point a camera at him you don't get irony ? you get clich�. So I had to find a way to try and reproduce Kate's mischievous attitude to genre and narrative without losing a BBC1 audience who would have expectations of their own.

Months later I arrive for the readthrough in Edinburgh ? always a nervous day for a screenwriter. They plonk me next to Kate herself. So I sit scrunched up in my seat as the actors read their lines ? the good ones Kate's, the bad ones mine ? willing myself not to read the notes she's scribbling in the margins of her script. Finally it's over. We hunker down for the customarily ghastly post-readthrough session, where BBC executives give their notes. As did the execs from Ruby Films. And the producer and the director. And Jason Isaacs. And, silently, the massed ranks of Atkinson readers out there with the perfect Jackson Brodie dancing in their heads. Even the cleaner thought the first act could do with a little work. But there was only one opinion I craved.

"Well done," Kate said. I had my soft place to land.

Six to watch: family comedies

In with the Flynns is the latest family-based sitcom. We list our favourites of the genre but have we missed any?

If you've been sat at home watching endless re-runs of the punchline deficient Two Pints of Lager and thought: "Do you know what the BBC needs? Another Will Mellor-starring vehicle" then you're in luck. Yes telly fans, gather round as the gag-free Mancunian is back with In with the Flynns, the Beeb's new family comedy loosely based on US sitcom Grounded for Life. Featuring everyday people who work double shifts to pay for things such as food, holidays and TV licence contributions, it actually doesn't look that bad.

It doesn't look that good either mind you, and certainly doesn't look like it belongs in the same league as some of the fine family comedies that have graced the small screen over the years. But who did it best? Gather round as we cast our eyes over six of our favourite family comedies. The Royle Family (1998?2010)

Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash's Bafta-winning comedy held a mirror up to front rooms across the country. True it was a gloriously distorted mirror, but like all good comedies of this ilk The Royle Family is filled with warm-hearted caricatures and colourful exaggerations of family members and dynamics that make up the nation's couch-dwelling clans. At first glance the single camera humdrum looks low on action. But below the surface lies an exceptional piece of comedy that captures the nuances of everyday family life from channel-hopping to tea-making and beams them back at us for our own viewing pleasure.

The Cosby Show (1984?1992)

Fun for all the family, the adventures of the Huxtable clan were entirely wholesome, offering clean cut entertainment that was only punctuated by the odd piece of morally ambiguous knitwear. Through the show Bill Cosby introduced American TV audiences to their first affluent black family. But rather than focusing on race, he instead found common ground for an otherwise disparate audience by diverting their attention to the family unit. Cast changes and ageing child actors eventually put pay to The Cosby Show's small-screen reign, but not before it had played its part in reviving mainstream sitcoms and blazing a trail for a string of standup inspired shows from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano and Roseanne Barr.

Roseanne (1988 ? 1997)

The antithesis of the clean-cut family sitcom, Roseanne presented square-eyed viewers with a world that they could finally relate to a blue collar family who struggled to pay the bills and fought, a lot. Money troubles, a messy house, fat parents, trouble making teens ? these were all part of the Roseanne landscape, a hyper-realistic world that did away with the suspension of disbelief traditionally associated with the sitcom staple. The Roseanne household ? made up of a brilliant cast that included John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Sara Gilbert ? was one of TV's first dysfunctional sitcom families. But their lives weren't always played out for laughs, with the show regularly switching from raucous comedy to kitchen sink drama in order to tackle tetchy contemporary issues such as abortion, motherhood and homosexuality.

Arrested Development (2003?2006)

One of the most under-appreciated gems in recent TV history. Following the adventures of the dysfunctional Bluth family ? your average mega-rich perpetrators of white collar crime who are forced to slum it in America's upper-middle classes ? Fox might have thought that the heartless sitcom-watching demographic had spoken by switching off in their droves. But like Wispas and BBC 6 Music, the public didn't quite appreciate what they had until it was almost snatched away from their grasp, and subsequent DVD releases have created a feverish fan base for Arrested Development making household names out of many of the show's stars.

Bread (1986-1991)

Aside from having one of the best theme tunes in British TV history, Carla Lane's comedy about a clan of hard-working Liverpudlians mixed poignancy with punchlines in the late 80s and early 90s. With its feet planted firmly in Thatcher's Britain, the show was an optimistic salute to "dole culture" as the Boswells ran rings around the state with a string of scams and swindles in order to fill the family coffers. It tailed off toward the end but at its height Bread drew some 21 million viewers with highlights including a couple of star cameos in the form of Paul and Linda McCartney.

The Simpsons (1989?present)

America's first family of animated comedy need no introduction, but their impact on a genre crammed full of potential best-in shows deserves further exploration. At its core remains the nuclear family who have been powering the programme and entertaining the world for more than 20 years.

Honourable mentions

My Family: It's not many people's cup of tea and you might not be able to name a single person who regularly tunes in. But now entering its 11th series it's got to be doing something right. Hasn't it?

Outnumbered: A carefully observed portrait of British family life that's as dysfunctional as it is heartfelt. Deserves a mention if only for Karen's many words of wisdom including this glorious skit on TV chefs

Modern Family: America's latest effort is fast shaping up to be one of its best and a refreshing take on the familiar family fare.

Could Seven Dwarves prove a success for C4?

Despite the title, this show is not as terrible ? or as contrived ? as you might have feared

For the last decade, the soundtrack to Channel 4's summer has featured Davina's screeches, forceful booing, and a booming refrain of "Who goes? You decide". But with Big Brother and its fame-desperate contestants now banished from the broadcaster's screens, Channel 4 has had to find a new household to film.

And the residents of the latest camera-filled residence? Seven dwarves, as Channel 4 has also named the programme in which they feature. Admittedly, the title doesn't exactly make it sound like an example of sensitive programme-making. But the result is not as terrible ? or quite as contrived ? as you might fear.

The seven dwarves in question were filmed last year as they appeared together in Snow White at Woking; instead of staying in digs, they lived together in a house full of cameras for seven weeks. We follow them at rehearsal, in the pub, having a fag in the garden, as they pile into the car to get to the panto every day.

It's all extremely watchable, and the actors involved, many of whom are appearing in Snow White for the umpteenth time, are a warm and at times hilarious bunch, who are open about other peoples' ? and their own ? reactions to their size. "We're all little ? but normal. I want people to see that and the laughs we have," said Karen Anderson.

Channel 4's most recent big documentary hit, of course, was Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, a show that some, me included, would argue held its subjects up for ridicule ? or at the very least failed to consider how ugly the reaction to the show might become. That must have been the worry with Seven Dwarves. But Hamish Mykura, Channel 4's head of documentaries on Wednesday said the show is not the successor to Gypsy Weddings, which, showed viewers a "subculture in all its amazing richness" which they found "much more fascinating than they'd have ever thought," he said. "I think there is an element of that about this but I certainly wouldn't say this is the follow-up to Gypsy Wedding."

Producer Nick Curwin, who was also behind Channel 4's One Born Every Minute and current show 24 Hours in A&E, said the show aims to: "Break through panto stereotypes to show how this group of dwarf actors face the challenges of ordinary life head-on."

Graham Linehan: My Today programme ambush

Trying to set up an artificial argument about The Ladykillers is typical of the dishonest, binary style of debate pushed by Today

On Monday, I was invited to go on the Today programme to talk about my part in the upcoming production of The Ladykillers. I would be asked about the "problems in adapting a classic film for the stage", I was told, and critic Michael Billington would be there to "provide a wider context". As soon as Michael arrived in the green room, I realised that he had, in fact, prepared for something else entirely.

Michael, somewhat embarrassed, told me that he was actually providing the opposing side in an argument about the wisdom of adapting The Ladykillers at all. What I thought was going to be a discussion about the technical challenges afforded by turning a classic film into a worthwhile play, was actually going to be a typical Today programme bunfight.

Fine ? if they were going to ambush me, I would ambush right back. I decided not to play. I tried to reveal as little about the play as I could, and made an early decision not to engage with any of Michael's arguments. I'm not sure of the precise moment where I chose to do all this, but it may well have been when the John Humphrys stand-in asked me "Have you changed it much?".

Have you changed it much. Basically, asking if I'd transcribed the thing.

Since we were changing briefs, I thought I'd introduce one of my own ? and what a treat it was to be able to complain directly to not-John Humphrys about the squabbling that passes for debate on that programme. Of course, they shut it down as quickly as they could, so let me finish my point here. The style of debate practised by the Today programme poisons discourse in this country. It is an arena where there are no positions possible except for diametrically opposed ones, where nuance is not permitted and where politicians are forced into defensive positions of utter banality. None of it is any good for the national conversation.

Of course, I'm not saying that news interviews can't be adversarial. Sometimes, you have to be nasty Columbo or we'd never get to the truth. But I'm talking about that very specific, very artificial, very Today programme format of a presenter acting as referee between two people who have been chosen to represent the opposing sides of a manufactured argument. It is a binary view of politics, of life and, as a result, it is also a dishonest one. Replace it with anything ? anything ? because anything would be better.

It was Michael in the red corner, me in the blue! Ding! Defend yourself! Justify yourself! What the host didn't realise is that because I'm not a politician, like the fellow I saw in the green room preparing his lines with an aide, I didn't have to be held hostage to their artificial, reductive, harmful format. So I shrugged and, as politely as I could, told them where to go.

The reason I wanted to get this out there, though, was because I have some questions for the Today programme producers. Is it policy to deliberately misbrief your guests and, if so, do you consider it ethical? In giving an accurate brief to one side of the discussion, am I to conclude that someone in the show had already made up their mind on the subject? Are such tactics the only way you guys feel you can maintain your little fight club?

Tech Updated: Hackers Jailbreak Apple iOS 5 Before Its Release : Abelavista

Apple’s newest iPhone and iPad mobile operating system, iOS 5, has already been jailbroken months before its scheduled release.

On Monday (June 6), Apple sent out advance copies of the next-generation iOS 5 to software developers. The next day, a member of the iPhone hacking collective Dev-Team, going by the pseudonym “MuscleNerd,” tweeted that he had jailbroken iOS 5.

(Jailbreaking removes Apple’s built-in restrictions, giving the user full control over the device and letting him install unauthorized apps and features. The practice is not illegal, but jailbroken devices are more vulnerable to attack by hackers.)

But that’s not all. Although iOS 5 won’t be released to the public until the fall, an amateur developer and devoted Apple fan from Turkey named Mert Erdir has already found a way to install iOS 5 on current devices by exploiting the software’s Voice Over system, the gadget website Gizmodo reported. Erdir gave his directions to Gizmodo to post.

Game of Thrones: Season one, episode eight

This week ramped up the violence, toned down the nudity and saw creator George RR Martin return on writing duties

Spoiler alert: Don't read on unless you have watched the first eight episodes of Game of Thrones on Sky Atlantic. For the purposes of this blog we are also going to (hopefully) avoid book spoilers.

'If you lose, your father dies, your sisters die, we all die'

In an exciting episode, written by George RR Martin himself, this week we were largely concerned with the passing of the old guard ? Robert is dead, Ned languishing in prison ? and the rearranging of the board as new players joined the game. Chief among those was Ned's son Robb, played with just the right amount of bullish bravado and adolescent sensitivity by Richard Madden. After seven weeks of smouldering in the background, Robb this week seized centre stage, demonstrating that he has both leadership ability and his father's belief in honour and justice. Whether the latter will help or hinder him remains unclear ? although it's worth noting that the astute Tyrion believes the boy warrior could succeed.

'You disappoint me child, why would you want to speak to a traitor?'

At least Robb is in charge of his own destiny, however uncertain. The Stark's second child Sansa is the game's most powerless (and arguably its most important) pawn and, as the episode progressed, it became increasingly clear that she will need help to survive the new court's dangerous crosscurrents. Sophie Turner was particularly adept this week as Sansa struggled to save her father while still clinging desperately to her dreams of courtly love. I also thoughtthe base note of genuine pity under Cersei's perfumed words was interesting. In contrast to the rest of the new king's advisors she knows what it is to be valued purely for what you bring to a marriage contract and clearly felt for Sansa, even as she moved to lock her in place.

'I hope you're not going to do anything stupid. Your duty lies here now'

Jon was also taking his first steps towards leadership, as news of Ned's imprisonment reached the Night's Watch. His dilemma is a fascinating one ? does he abandon his rag-tag band of new brothers for his old family? ? and Kit Harrington did a good job of leaving us unsure which way he will jump. That said the fact that the Night's Watch currently has a bunch of reanimated corpses to deal with means that his decision essentially boils down to: desert, be branded a traitor, fight alongside your brother, probably die; or stay, support your new brothers, get attacked by zombies, probably die. It's hardly the most pleasant of choices.

'I do not have a gentle heart'

The Queen in waiting learned about the implications of power this week as the Dothraki scenes raised some interesting questions about the nature of corruption. It's one thing to convince your warlord husband to reclaim your kingdom and quite another to see that intent put into practice. If Dany hadn't desired a kingdom then the Dothraki wouldn't have ransacked the village for slaves to sell in order to buy the ships to sail to Westeros and claim the Kingdom their Khaleesi had lost? And if that all sounds a little like the old nursery rhyme ('For want of a nail?') it is ? albeit with added throat slashing and the odd attempted rape.

Additional thoughts

The scene between Arya and Syrio Forel is one of the most iconic in the books and lived up to that billing on screen. In previous episodes Syrio has always tipped into Princess Bride territory but this brief, powerful scene captivated me to the extent that I found myself shouting "Just move Arya, run" at the screen. Did Syrio die or not? I'll leave that to you to debate below although my personal opinion is that the key phrase was: "What do we say to death? Not today."

I enjoyed Tyrion's demonstration that the phrase "A Lannister always pays his debts" can mean much more than you might think. His decision to pay Lysa back for her treatment by enlisting the mountain clans to ravage the Vale was brutal and brilliant ? although his face when he realised that he might not have been as clever as he'd thought was also priceless.

Isaac Hempstead-Wright did a lot with a little scene as Bran was abandoned to rule Winterfell (plus Rickon appeared and he spoke too). While it's clear that Catelyn feels she must advise her oldest son, I would argue that it's a bit questionable to abandon your 11-year-old to rule by himself with only his angry younger brother and an elderly maester for support.

One of the most interesting things about this series remains its willingness to overthrow convention. In a straight-forward epic fantasy Robb would lead his army victoriously down to King's Landing and free his father to the sound of huzzahs all round. But this is an altogether darker tale and it's impossible to tell who will be left victorious at the end. (As a betting woman I'd probably place my cash on Varys: he might not resemble a hero, as he astutely pointed out, but he knows how to read to the signs and "serves the realm".)

Violence Count

In what was the most violent episode of the series we started with the brutal end of last week's massacre of the Ned Stark loyalists, progressed to witness the considerable sword skills of Syrio Forel, watched Arya stick a stable boy with the pointy end, saw two dead rangers come to creepy life before being set on fire, met the joyfully violent mountain clans, dropped in on a Dothraki raiding party, were treated to a brief demonstration of Khal Drogo's hand-to-hand combat skills (complete with epiglottis extraction) and saw Greatjon Umber give new meaning to the term "northern hardman" as he lost two fingers to a direwolf and came up laughing.

Nudity Count

Only one flash of nudity this week (a random full frontal view of Hodor) with even the Dothraki rapes occurring largely off screen. No doubt normal nudity service will be resumed next week.

Random Brit of the Week

Clive Mantle aka Casualty's adulterous Dr Mike Barratt had great fun in a very different role as the bellicose Greatjon Umber of finger-losing infamy.

Cheryl Cole offered US X Factor return ? if she can prove herself

Cheryl Cole can keep her $1.2m position as a judge on the US version of The X Factor if she can demonstrate to Simon Cowell and TV network Fox that she is committed to "making the programme work".

She has to agree to rejoin the judging panel by this Wednesday when The X Factor auditions move to New York ? and perform better on screen than in earlier auditions which nearly led to her being dropped.

Cole was described as "not herself" by US television sources in the earlier US auditions, which led to Cowell and the TV network to suggest that she move back to be a judge on the original version of the X Factor.

News of those conversations began to leak a week and a half ago, but the initial speculation centred on the suggestion that she had been fired from the US show, partly because Fox executives could not understand her accent.

Cowell and Fox chose not to deny the speculation as furious behind-the scenes manoeuvres followed ? and a battle broke out over what would happen to the Girls Aloud singer.

On this account, Cole first asked for �2m to appear in the X Factor UK as a consolation prize, double her previous fee. ITV balked at that figure ? and Cole did not sign up. Since then Cole and her team have "gone to ground", and become hard to negotiate with.

What is less clear, though, is whether the now public wooing of Cole represents a genuine offer or part of a spin strategy to make Cowell, his team and Fox appear reasonable when they believe Cole will not participate.

Cole could also take a lesser role in the US show as an alternative to being a judge, but whatever happens she has been promised that she will receive her fee from Fox ? estimated at $1.2m. There had been speculation that she would not be paid.

Friends of Cole say that she has been beset with conflicting advice during the X Factor crisis reflecting "a host of personal agendas". She has been advised to spend some time "concentrating on her musical career" in an effort to move on from the US fiasco ? but is also considering a role as a judge on new singing reality show format The Voice, which is being fought over by both the BBC and ITV.

Sean Penn says he'd like to take his friend Charlie Sheen on a humanitarian mission to impoverished Haiti, where he said the "Two and a Half Men" star could do a lot of good for the people and also help himself.

"I think his energies, intelligence and passion could be both of service and servicing to him, as it is to all who are touched by the struggle of the Haitian people," Penn sai

"Charlie is one of the very few public people who cannot be accused of using the media to his own benefit. I would very much like to show my old friend the world of needs on the ground in Haiti, and introduce him and his tremendous wit to our hard working Haitian staff," Penn said of Sheen, who has been on a major media blitz since Monday.

The Caribbean nation is still struggling to recover from the devastating earthquake that struck more than a year ago and Penn has dedicated much of his time over the past year to help improve conditions.

Tyneside has emerged as the centre of the universe

There was a time, not so long ago, where the sole cultural representation of Tyneside was Byker Grove. For those of us living elsewhere, the show quickly became a vital source of information. Without it, we would have never known of the region's unconventionally bearded men, its children called Spuggy or its dangerously unregulated paintball scene.

How quickly things change. Out of nowhere, Tyneside has recently emerged as the centre of the entire universe. It's got the coolest streets, an accent that swallows up nearby towns, one of the world's most addictively trashy reality TV shows and, in Cheryl Cole, a contender for the title of most ubiquitous woman to have ever lived.

But let's start classy. Thanks to destinations such as the Baltic contemporary art centre and The Sage, as well as a view spectacular enough to warrant comparisons with Budapest, Gateshead's South Shore Road has just been named the hippest street in Britain. The title might exist only as a Google PR stunt, but the style and modernity of South Shore Road means that the win is entirely valid.

Not that you should necessarily start to think of Tyneside purely as a hotbed of highbrow cultural appreciation. Not while Geordie Shore exists. If you've yet to witness MTV's latest blind stab at reality television, you're missing out on something really quite special. Taking the lead from The Only Way Is Essex, it's a shrieking orgy of fake tan, false lashes, fights, booze and near-constant pansexual nudity starring a cast of hormone-fuelled fluorescent ninnies who appear to have been chosen as much for their inability to understand basic social norms as their ridiculously swollen arms and breasts.

Just two episodes in, Newcastle MP Chi Onwurah has already condemned Geordie Shore as "bordering on pornographic" and vowed to raise questions in parliament. The show's producers have a different view, praising the cast's warmth, loyalty and humour. But the fact of the matter is that Geordie Shore has earned MTV its highest ratings for three years. It might even become another The Osbournes. So if you think you're sick of it now, just wait until Jon Culshaw starts doing impressions of Greg and Charlotte-Letitia gets named as the next X Factor judge. History has proved that these things will happen, and also that you will despair when they do.

Then again, it would be fitting if someone from Geordie Shore ended up on X Factor, because that series arguably played a hefty role in Tyneside's resurgence. And that's all thanks to Cheryl Cole. Due to her prominence as a judge she's become the unofficial face of the region, effortlessly embodying so many of its strongest attributes. She's feisty, determined, aspirational, unafraid to express emotion or make unpopular decisions, often underdressed and constantly locked in an epic struggle with the laws of physics over the maximum possible size of her hair. With the potential exception of that time she got narked off and walloped a toilet attendant, you could argue that when Tyneside thinks of itself, it sees Cheryl Cole.

More than anything else, though, there's the accent. Cole is in possession of a Geordie accent so impossibly thick that she couldn't possibly come from anywhere else. It's so thick that more than 52,000 Twitter users follow the phonetic Cheryl Cole parody Cheryl Kerl (sample entry: "Ah cannat wait til Weeyin Roonee unveeilz iz new hawdo. Mebbes if itz canny L'Oreals meight sein im up. Aw, tharr'd be mint!"). It's so thick that a video spoofing her to the sound of Run DMC entitled Talk This Way has become an unexpected YouTube hit. And, famously, it's so thick that she was sacked from US X Factor before American viewers had the chance to wonder why the pretty girl on the end randomly shouts vowel sounds at contestants. Cheryl's accent has made the international press. Ant and Dec make jokes about it on TV. That's how famous it is.

It's so strong, in fact, that other towns are desperate to have it for themselves. Paul Kerswill, professor of sociolinguistics at Lancaster university, has spotted the Geordie accent slowly oozing across the north-east to as far away as Cumbria and Berwick. On the plus side, this can be taken as proof that Tyneside has finally managed to shake off its Byker Grove/Jimmy Five Bellies reputation and carve out a new one.

But it's not all rosy. Just look at how London gave birth to estuary English, and how quickly that mutated to mockney and infected everywhere from Dover to Bracknell. Now that the whole world wants to be a Geordie, true-blood Tynesiders must cling on to their identity before it gets diluted to nothing. Perhaps they should think up a term for the young pretenders before it's too late. Fauxdies, maybe. Geordon'ts?

A little early to celebrate: Anne Hathaway and James Franco ended their Oscars hosting gig triumphantly

Punching the air triumphantly at the end of the Oscars ceremony, it was clear that Anne Hathaway and her co-host James Franco were ready to pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

Anne was later seen partying up a storm at the Weinstein after-party, throwing back champagne and dancing animatedly with a borrowed Oscar statuette.

But as the actress toasted her hosting gig, critics were already writing up scathing reviews of her and co-host James Franco's 'clumsy and downright painful' skits.

It had been hoped that employing Anne and James as hosts for this year's Academy Awards would give the ceremony a young and fresh feel.

But despite bringing their considerable comedic talents to the plate while presenting the Academy Awards, using skits and montages to add to their hosting duties, the pair's performance was met with mixed critical reception.

The 83rd Academy Awards opened with a montage of Hathaway and Franco delving into the mind of former Oscar winner Alec Baldwin in an Inception-inspired moment, narrated by the smooth-voiced Morgan Freeman.

And things continued to get more and more surreal, as the pair poked fun at The King's Speech, which took home four Oscars, The Fighter and True Grit, as well as The Social Network and Back to the Future.

The pair attempted to impress the hard-nosed Vincent Cassel with their dancing abilities, and left Portman looking flustered with their 'talent'.
Hathaway also returned to her former duty at the Oscars in 2009 when she joined then-host Hugh Jackman for a duet to open the show.

Richard Carpenter taught me how to get into a scene and how to get out of it; about cutting and pace. He was my starting point

Richard Carpenter, writer of Robin of Sherwood, gave me my first job in television. I was a not very well known children's writer when I sent in a story for the show. I had absolutely no experience, had never written for TV, and really had no inclination to be a television writer.

But Richard took me on. I was an apprentice to him really; he was my mentor. At the time Robin of Sherwood had around 12 or 13 million viewers; it was one of the biggest shows on television. So I was going from nothing and nowhere to the absolute top of the pile. It was as though an unknown writer was given six episodes of Downton Abbey. But Richard, who was known as Kip, just said: "Go for it!" He believed in me. It was an amazing turn of fortune. I wrote five episodes for the series. I think Richard did the other seven.

Working with Kip on Robin of Sherwood was the high point of my career in terms of the fun and sheer energy. I'd deliver a script on Monday, and they would start shooting it on Friday. I had the greatest time of my life working on the show.

Richard and his producer Paul Knight guided me as to what I should do and what they needed from me. If I went to pitch a story to them, they would embrace it and move it on in a better direction. Kip's notes weren't confrontational, they were always helpful and inspirational. He taught me how to get into a scene and how to get out of it; about cutting and pace. He was my starting point ? I listened to him.

I wasn't really aware of Richard before I worked for him. He'd written Catweazle ? a children's programme starring Geoffrey Bayldon as an 11th- century time-travelling magician ? which I watched as a teenager, and his work always had his own stamp on it, but unless you are Paul Abbott or Steven Moffat, the writer is not the person the viewer notices.

I never worked with Kip after Robin of Sherwood; there was never another show that needed us both as writers at the same time. I haven't been in touch with him for many years. But he was such a bundle of energy that even though he must be getting on for 80 now, I doubt there's much question of him retiring from writing.

With the draw for the knockout stage set up as it is, there is a gigantic difference between finishing first in Group B and second or third.

The Group B winner will get to play the second place team in Group C, which will most likely be Canada. The Canadians aren’t exactly pushovers, but they’re not outstanding. Compare playing Canada to the United States or Costa Rica because that is who the runners up and third-place team in Group B will likely have to play in the quarterfinals. There’s a huge gap there.

Fox and Simon Cowell officially name Nicole Scherzinger as Cole's replacement on the US version of the hit UK talent show

Cheryl Cole has been formally dropped as a judge from the US X Factor, its US broadcaster, Simon Cowell and his production company jointly confirmed on Monday.

Her departure comes despite an 11th-hour olive branch from Cowell, who indicated through intermediaries on Sunday that she could return to the show if she raised her game on screen.

However, it was never thought likely that Cole would take up the offer ? as the Girls Aloud singer seems to have been unhappy in the US, performing poorly in the initial filming of the Fox version of the British hit show.

Cole is to be replaced by Nicole Scherzinger ? the Pussycat Dolls singer who has acted as a guest judge on the UK X Factor ? as the US show heads this week to New York to film the next round of public auditions.

The formal statement, released by Fox and the programme's co-producers, Cowell's Syco and his partners Fremantle Media, said simply that the trio "confirm Nicole Scherzinger will be replacing Cheryl Cole on the judging panel of The X Factor".

Cole is still expected to receive her judge's fee, thought to be $1.2m, after the fiasco, which saw Cowell stake some of his reputation on bringing the Girls Aloud star to the US, where she was a relative unknown.

Cowell fought to persuade Fox that she could do the programme only for Cole to do so badly in the early filming that crisis talks were held over about her future. Fox insiders were understood to be particularly sceptical after Cole was "not herself" in the filming in Los Angeles.

Monday's statement also confirmed that Steve Jones, the Welsh former T4 presenter, will be the show's main presenter. He was previously tipped to co-host with Scherzinger.

BBC4 to ditch drama and comedy to focus on arts

Channel controller Richard Klein's statement indicates emphasis on arts and culture as corporation looks to save 20% of budget

The digital channel BBC4 had plenty to celebrate at the Bafta TV awards last month, including prizes for its nostalgic drama The Road to Coronation Street, and the Jo Brand sitcom Getting On.

But the upmarket channel looks likely to lose its comedies and dramas in the future as part of a rebrand that will see it focus on arts programming as the BBC aims to save �700m, or 20% of its budget.

BBC sources indicated that was the "clear direction of travel" for BBC4, despite its recent awards success and hits such as the Danish crime drama The Killing ? another Bafta winner.

However, for all the critical and media acclaim, BBC4 has less than a 1% share of the television audience, while spending �55m a year. BBC management is keen to beef up BBC2, which suffered the biggest drop in audience share of the five main channels in 2010. As a result, programmes that would have gone to BBC4 and elsewhere will now be shown first on BBC2.

It is understood that the BBC's new director of vision, George Entwistle, wants the channel, which lost nearly 8% of its audience last year, to be more "sharply defined".

The proposals are part of BBC director general Mark Thompson's Delivering Quality First (DQF) initiative to deliver fewer, bigger and better programmes while slashing the BBC's overall budget.

In the BBC's statement of programme policy, published last week, BBC4 controller Richard Klein described his channel's aim "to be British television's most intellectually and culturally enriching channel, offering an ambitious range of UK and international arts, music and culture", but with no mention in his opening summary of drama or comedy.

In his vision for the service for the next 12 months, Klein described BBC4 as "the gold card channel for arts and culture, approaching subject matter at a level of depth, detail and authority second to none". In a statement spanning nearly 650 words, comedy and drama ? which are the most expensive television genres to produce ? were relegated to just one line. "The aim is to offer discourse and insight through factual, drama and entertainment programming," he said.

A stripped down, arts-focused channel would make BBC4 more of a direct competitor to Sky Arts, a comparison that BBC management have tended to shy away from in the past, pointing to the BBC channel's bigger budget and audience reach.

Successful BBC4 dramas have included biopics of Enid Blyton and Mary Whitehouse. Rosamund Pike and Rachael Stirling starred in its recent adaptation of DH Lawrence's novels The Rainbow and Women In Love.

A number of dramas remain in the BBC4 pipeline, including a commissioned single film about the photographer David Bailey, We'll Take Manhattan, and a two-part adaptation of Charles Dickens's last and unfinished novel, Edwin Drood.

A spokeswoman for Klein said: "BBC4 has always had a strong backbone of arts, music, culture and knowledge programming. Since strategic review it has been placing a greater emphasis on the arts and Richard Klein's statement reflects this." A BBC spokesman said it was "speculative" to pre-empt the likely outcome of the DQF review.

The BBC said in a statement: "We are not going to get drawn into a running commentary ? no decisions have been taken and therefore these claims remain speculation. Any decisions coming out of the process would be subject to approval by the BBC Trust."
